I brought this up in a post last summer, because Tom Douglas' paper showed that recent wetter summers have tended to produce more thaw.

https://ak-wx.blogspot.com/2020/07/copious-rain-and-permafrost-study.html
Richard Jameshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08313902028896263276noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4572286363399496963.post-42517310942499191062021-03-20T20:11:23.910-08:002021-03-20T20:11:23.910-08:00In addition to the increase in air temperature cou...In addition to the increase in air temperature couldn’t the increased interior precip (https://uaf-iarc.org/our-work/alaskas-changing-environment/) play a role? Someone should set up a soil temperature monitoring study (across a soil depth gradient) along a catena of soils in Fairbanks stretching from higher to lower elevation sites. No doubt temperature inversions, post fire conditions (i.e., organic mat thickness), and snow depth (insulation and water inputs) are also factors playing into the growth of the active layer in Interior permafrost soils. It seems to me the DOT would be motivated to fund such a study as their road infrastructure is so vulnerable to changing soil thermal properties.TC Alaskahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18158549088884255382noreply@blogger.com
