The area under the curves likely varies as noted due to the multiple observations versus the simple arithmetic avg.

But the next time someone notes we've broken a temp record I'll recall this exercise and wonder if we really did? And if so by how much and by what method? It is what it is.

No Zombie tracks noted in the fresh Fairbanks snow tonight around the house. The candy is mine. The late snowfall record is safe for another year.

GaryNL7Yhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15874712728971005352noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4572286363399496963.post-15308776612489316002013-10-31T21:52:33.462-08:002013-10-31T21:52:33.462-08:00Very sorry for the confusion Gary. I updated the post with some more information and a third chart. Let me know if that helps.Climatologist49https://www.blogger.com/profile/04560505931210357679noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4572286363399496963.post-80703130701631631752013-10-31T18:38:27.967-08:002013-10-31T18:38:27.967-08:00This is confusing, but admittedly stat analysis is...This is confusing, but admittedly stat analysis isn't the brightest tool in my box.

Are the Blue lines in Fig. 1 the daily range of recordings versus the Two Temp average in Black? Seems they vary some, but I may not be interpreting the info well. I'd rather see parallel lines of the two means with some level of significance attached based upon variability.

The only way I can see by taking the daily max and min temp and dividing by two, and having that closely approximate an average of all recorded temps for that day is if the distribution about the mean of hourly temp observations was normal.

For some times and locations that may be the case, for others? If that's indeed the case with temperatures, then a simple min-max thermometer could replace hourly temperature observations with a once a day reading.

GaryNL7Yhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15874712728971005352noreply@blogger.com
