Otherwise, I'll put it in the queue to modify my Java code that looks at the entire U.S. 1981-2010 climate files.Climatologist49https://www.blogger.com/profile/04560505931210357679noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4572286363399496963.post-75336046416531798362013-10-26T17:58:44.738-08:002013-10-26T17:58:44.738-08:00Rick, that's a good point about the low-level ...Rick, that's a good point about the low-level inversion at Fairbanks - thanks. Clearly not all interior locations have a higher diurnal range than on the coast. Diurnal cycles are highly elevation-dependent, and presumably in most regions the higher elevations show less diurnal temperature variability.

I looked up a half-dozen locations in the lower 48 and some (e.g. Dallas, Atlanta) have surprisingly little variation in diurnal range around the year. Here are dates of annual minimum:

Dallas May 18
Atlanta Sep 3
New York Dec 12
Minneapolis Dec 1
Las Vegas Dec 17
Seattle Jan 2

Brian's neat mapping software might be able to produce some nice maps for the entire NCDC dataset, if he were so inclined.
Richard Jameshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08313902028896263276noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4572286363399496963.post-14573177467331556642013-10-26T14:50:35.791-08:002013-10-26T14:50:35.791-08:00Part of the larger diurnal range at Fairbanks is t...Part of the larger diurnal range at Fairbanks is the valley location and (sometimes) inversions that mostly break during the day, at least until late in the month when there is snow cover. Keystone Ridge mean diurnal range is 10ºF or less Oct 02-Nov 20, and just passed the date annual minimum diurnal of 8.5ºF.

What's are dates of minimum diurnals at mid-latitudes? I'd guess not many places have an autumn minimum. Rickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03946704894714514716noreply@blogger.com
