This basically corresponds to the Climate Prediction Center's tercile categories, with red colors showing temperatures in the CPC "much above" tercile and blue showing temperatures in the "much below" tercile. Of course, you don't need a weatherman to tell you that mild weather has been short supply for quite a while now.
Great plot Rick...easy on the eyes and brain. How about one with Anchorage and Barrow included? Curious to see how our WX compared to theirs during that interval. Misery likes company I suppose.

If cold comes from the north, then it's going to be cold for a bit longer. Just my simplistic take on Alaskan weather.

Check out this IR SAT shot from 4/27/13 around 0100 GMT (5pm Lcl 4/26). Relatively cold NW flow (see previous post above) has set up cloud streets (horizontal convective rolls), and near higher terrain are displays of colder air and clouds (white) downstream. Bringing cold air to Fairbanks of course.
